FEATURES AND UNIQUE ELEMENTS of the 1971 Javelin/AMX Standard Equipment Supplied By American Motors: * Wire Mesh Grille Screen * Front Grille Mounted Turn Signal Lenses * Front Valance Air Vents * 360-2 Barrel Engine * Console * Electric Clock * Machine Turned Dash & Door Overlays * Deck Mounted Spoiler * Space-Saver Spare Tire * 14x6 Slot Style Wheels * E70x14 White Letter Tires ELEMENTS UNIQUE TO THE 1971 JAVELIN , JAVELIN SST, & JAVELIN AMX: * Cowl Induction used a dual snorkel air cleaner, later models used a single snorkel unit ( AMX only ). * ALL V-8 Engines were identified with fender plates, 1972-73 models designated the 401 engine only, and none were marked in 1974. * Early 1971 engines were a 10.2 : 1 high compression design. This was changed mid-year to 9.5 : 1 with the onset of low lead fuel. Subsequent years were reduced further to an 8.5 : 1 compression ratio. * The '71 Javelin continued to use the Borg Warner Automatic Transmission. In 1972, AMC switched to the Chrysler Tourqueflight Transmission. * The '71 still featured the Eaton power steering pump, the later years used the GM Saginaw unit. * The windshield washer reservoir uses a black plastic cap that secures with a screw. Around mid-year 1971 a similar cap with a ring that snaps around the bottle neck was used. * The AMX wire mesh screen was left a natural metal finish. Later years had the mesh blackened out. ( AMX only ) * Turn signal lenses were clear, and required an amber bulb. The following years used amber lenses that would accept a clear bulb. ( AMX only ) * The radio antenna is mounted on the right of the cowl for 1971. On '72-'74 models, it was mounted on the fender. * Instrument panel switches used plain black handles, which changed in 1972 to silver handles with international symbols. * The center console extends under the glove box on earlier '71 models. Later that year a shorter version became standard, which ends at the front of the glove box. * The rim-blow steering wheel from 1970 was retained on the early 1971 vehicles. By mid-year a stainless steel 3-spoke wheel and center horn button replaced it. * The 1971 Javelin neutral safety switch ( for console automatic transmissions ) is unique to this year and model only. This is not likely all of the unique aspects to the 1971 Javelin model year. As I find new elements, they will be added to this list.
